LA CASCADE COULEUVRE – A MUST-DO HIKE!
07/14/2024The Couleuvre waterfall is located in the northern part of the island in the commune of Prêcheur. It’s a remarkable spot you shouldn’t miss during your stay in Martinique.
To get there, head towards Prêcheur, pass Anse Céron, and continue to the end of the main road, crossing the lush North Caribbean forest. You’ve arrived at Couleuvre!
The parking lot is the starting point for many exceptional hikes, including the famous Prêcheur/Grand Rivière, Anse Lévrier/Anse à Voile, Anse Couleuvre, and Cascade Couleuvre hikes.
Cascade Couleuvre Itinerary
Allow 1 to 1.15 hours to reach the stunning Couleuvre waterfall. Just behind the sign, a small path on the right leads you along the Couleuvre River, which winds through the forest. You’ll see remnants of the old plantation (distillery) and encounter diverse flora and fauna.
Along the way, you’ll discover magnificent silk-cotton trees, cacao trees, and heliconias. If you look closely on a tree trunk by the path, you might spot:
- The Matoutou Falaise (Antillean Avicularia),
- The endemic tarantula of the Antilles, which has been a protected species since 1995.
You may also see a mongoose or two darting by; they’re quick, so keep an eye out! Stay on the marked trails to avoid encountering the fer-de-lance (trigonocéphale) snake. Rare but dangerous, caution is key.
At the end of your hike, you’ll be greeted by the majestic waterfall, where clear, cool water cascades down a wall over 20 meters high. It’s the perfect spot for a refreshing dip, reminiscent of a Tahiti Douche commercial! After such a hike, it’s pure bliss.
Return via the same path. Once back at the starting point, we recommend taking a dip at Anse Couleuvre. This magnificent black sand beach is one of the most beautiful and wildest in Martinique.
