Climate and weather in Martinique: everything you need to know to plan your trip

Located in the heart of the Lesser Antilles, Martinique enjoys a pleasant tropical maritime climate all year round. Warm temperatures, refreshing sea breezes and generous sunshine make it an ideal destination for lovers of nature, beaches and adventure. But to make the most of your stay, it is important to know about the different seasons so you can better prepare for your trip. ☀️

A tropical climate tempered by the trade winds

Martinique enjoys a humid tropical climate, tempered by the trade winds, constant winds from the east that cool the atmosphere and make the heat pleasant.

  • Temperatures: these generally vary between 24°C and 31°C throughout the year.🌡️
  • Sea: the water is warm and inviting, hovering around 27°C, perfect for swimming or water sports.🌊

Unlike mainland France or other continental countries, seasonal variations are minimal: there is no cold winter or cool spring; here, the heat is constant, with differences related more to humidity levels and rainfall frequency.

The two main seasons in Martinique

The weather in Martinique is divided into two main seasons:

1. The dry season (December to May)☀️
Warm temperatures moderated by trade winds.

  • Low rainfall, generally in the form of short showers.
  • Clear skies and lower humidity, ideal for outdoor activities and excursions.
  • This is the most popular time for travellers, especially those escaping the European winter.

2. The wet season (June to November)☀️☂️
Warmer and more humid atmosphere.

  • More frequent rainfall, but it quickly gives way to sunshine.
  • Possibility of tropical storms or hurricanes, especially between August and October.

In between: the off-seasons

In April-May and November-December, there is a smooth transition between Lent and Winter, often offering a good compromise: less rain than in the middle of Winter and fewer people than in the high tourist season.☘️

Differences with the weather in mainland France, Canada, etc.

In mainland France, the seasons are marked by significant variations in temperature and light. In Martinique:

  • There is no marked difference between winter and summer, and the length of the day varies very little (around 11 to 13 hours of daylight).
  • Rainfall can occur at any time, but rarely lasts all day.
  • The air remains warm even in the evening, allowing you to enjoy the beach or terraces all year round.

When is the best time to visit Martinique?

If you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine and dry weather, December to April is ideal. But if you enjoy lush nature, solitude and more attractive prices, June to November offers a unique charm, with fewer tourists.

A few tips to make the most of Martinique’s climate

  • Protect yourself from the sun: sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are essential, even when it’s overcast.🕶️
  • Bring a light waterproof jacket for sudden tropical showers.☔
  • Hydrate regularly: heat and humidity increase perspiration.🚰
  • For hiking, go in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat.⏲️

In summary☀️

Martinique enjoys a mild, sunny climate all year round, with two main seasons: a dry Lent season and a wet winter season. Whether you come to enjoy the paradise beaches, explore Mount Pelée or dive into the turquoise waters, there is always an ideal time to visit our island.
