Hiking in Martinique with Peace of Mind

07/14/2024 Off By Nathalie de Beyond the Beach

Hiking in Martinique requires a lot of preparation and anticipation. Hiking is an outdoor activity that involves walking along a marked or unmarked trail. It’s both a leisure activity for discovery and a form of physical exercise that is easily accessible and doable.

To hike with peace of mind, here are some tips to follow:

HIKING AND GATHERING INFORMATION

Before setting out, check the weather conditions and the state of the trails.

  • Météo France Martinique: 0892680808 (€0.30/min)
  • National Forestry Office: 0596607070

CARRY A BACKPACK

Include a sweater, a waterproof windbreaker, a change of clothes, a swimsuit, and of course, good walking shoes—light, closed, with treads, and waterproof (for sudden showers, muddy trails, or river crossings, for example).

HIKING ESSENTIALS

A hat or cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, a camera, a mobile phone, a mini first-aid kit with disinfectant, band-aids (including special ones for blisters), aspirin and paracetamol, Arnica cream (for bruises), elastic bandage, penknife, scissors, fine and pointed tweezers (for removing splinters or sea urchin spines), and a flashlight or headlamp.

BRING ENOUGH WATER

To hike in Martinique’s heat, it’s crucial to carry enough water. Opportunities to refill are rare: thermal flasks or water bottles. Plan for 2 liters of water per person. Drink water frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Pack some energy-boosting snacks.

FOR A SUCCESSFUL HIKE, START EARLY IN THE MORNING

Hiking in Martinique means an early wake-up for some. This allows enough time to return in case the weather turns and to enjoy the landscapes before the clouds arrive.

HIKING TIMES

These are only indicative. They obviously depend on your stamina and physical condition on the day, your motivation, the weight of your backpack, the state of the trail, the group’s ambiance, the number of stops, etc. Be careful not to get caught by nightfall.

CAUTION UNDER MANCHINEEL TREES

This species, particularly common on beaches, hides a significant danger under an innocuous appearance. The sap from a broken branch, leaf, or fruit (small apple) is particularly toxic. Avoid taking shelter under it when it rains! Burns require immediate medical attention.

CODE OF CONDUCT

  • Stick to the marked trail to limit trampling vegetation and creating erosion paths.
  • Respect hedges and fences. Be sure to close gates after passing through.
  • Respect private property.
  • Leave no trace of your passage and carry your waste with you to the next trash bin.
  • Don’t pollute water sources.
  • Do not light fires.
  • Avoid damaging crops.
  • Respect the wildlife and flora.
  • Do not pick flowers and plants or take specimens.
  • Do not disturb animals.
  • Do not mutilate trees or pick fruits.
  • Avoid disturbing the peace of the area.
  • Be courteous and discreet with local residents. Remember that the welcome you receive will greatly depend on your behavior.
  • Adopt behaviors that do not endanger others.
  • Respect facilities provided for your comfort and safety.
