Embark on an unforgettable Mount Pelée hike and discover one of Martinique’s most iconic natural landmarks. Starting from the Aileron trailhead at around 800 meters above sea level, you’ll begin a challenging climb with approximately 700 meters of elevation gain.

Accompanied by Nicolas, your experienced guide, you’ll first hike through a dense and mysterious tropical forest. As you gain altitude, the landscape gradually changes. The vegetation becomes sparser, volcanic rocks emerge, and the air becomes cooler and more humid.

As you continue toward the summit, the scenery opens up. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy spectacular views over the Caribbean Sea, volcanic craters, and the valleys of northern Martinique.

Two Routes to Discover Mount Pelée

Depending on your fitness level and expectations, you can choose between two hiking routes.

The first option takes you to the second mountain refuge. This route allows you to experience the unique atmosphere of the volcano without completing the full ascent. It’s a great choice if you want to explore Mount Pelée while keeping the physical effort more moderate.

The second option takes you all the way to the Chinois summit, at 1,397 meters above sea level. This full ascent is more demanding, but it also offers an even more rewarding and spectacular experience.

Your choice of route naturally determines the duration and difficulty of the hike.

A Hike Through Nature, Volcanic Landscapes and History

Throughout your Mount Pelée hike, Nicolas shares his knowledge of the island’s geology and volcanic activity. He also tells you about the devastating 1902 eruption, a tragic event that profoundly shaped the history of Saint-Pierre and Martinique.

You’ll also learn about the work of the Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory, which monitors Mount Pelée and contributes to volcanic risk prevention.

A Mount Pelée hike is a challenging adventure, but the experience is truly unique.

When the skies are clear, breathtaking views stretch across northern Martinique and the Caribbean Sea. When clouds surround the summit, the atmosphere becomes almost mystical as you hike through the volcanic mist.

Between tropical forests, rugged volcanic landscapes, and mysterious clouds at the summit, this volcano hike in Martinique takes you deep into one of the island’s most impressive natural environments.

• Price to the second refuge:
  • 60€ per person – minimum 3 participants (a deposit of 12€ is payable in advance. The balance of 48€ is payable on site in cash)
  • Price to the summit: 85€ (a deposit of 17€ is payable in advance. The balance of 63€ is to be paid on site in cash).
• Included: Hike with guide.
• Not included: Transfer (if you would like private transport to get there, please contact us by email at so that we can provide you with a quote).
• Location: Refuge de l’Aileron.
• Minimum: 3 participants (if you are solo or in a pair, you will have to pay for 3)
• Duration: 5 to 7 hours of walking.
• Level: Difficult.
• Distance: 7 to 8 km.
• Elevation: Between 650m and 850m of positive elevation.
• Difficulty: Technical hike reserved for people in good physical condition. Weather conditions can be very variable: intense heat, rain, wind or cool temperatures at altitude are possible.
• Bring: Good walking shoes, 1.5 litres of water, snacks, a hearty breakfast, rainwear
  and a light jumper.
