Authentic Excursions in Martinique
Martinique is undoubtedly renowned for its beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise water..a perfect setting for seaside cocktails and swimming. However, it’s much more than that! It’s a land rich in history, culture, and diverse landscapes. During our excursions, your guide will delight in sharing it all with you. We take you to the most typical places on the island. Heading south, you’ll find the pottery village of Trois Ilets, established in 1783 within a former Jesuit convent. It’s the oldest business in Martinique, producing terracotta on an industrial scale alongside artisanal pottery. Here, you’ll encounter historic terracotta works and traditional Creole houses : an immersive cultural experience.
Another must-visit village is Anses d’Arlets, a characteristic fishing village where you can enjoy peace and quiet along with beautiful beaches and charming streets. It’s also a great opportunity to try out the snorkeling kits we provide. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot turtles, tropical fish, and stunning corals near Kay Rock.
Martinique is predominantly Catholic, and you’ll have the chance to visit the Batala Church, also known as the Sacred Heart Church, built in 1925. It’s actually a replica of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre, Paris, intended for the populations who settled in Fort-de-France, creating the new Batala neighborhoods.
The Varied Landscapes of the Island of Flowers
Throughout the day, our excursions will take you on a journey through breathtaking landscapes, allowing you to witness diverse and stunning scenery. You’ll surely capture some of your most beautiful photos from the viewpoint at Diamond Rock. This small island shimmering in the distance is actually the remnant of a volcano millions of years old.
Continuing with the theme, if you associate Martinique with white sand, you may be surprised! You’ll also find volcanic beaches like Cabret Beach. Surrounded by calm, transparent waters, you can relax on the black sand beach while admiring the imposing Mount Pelée. This is where Christopher Columbus first set foot on Martinique in 1502.
The island also offers wonderful green havens of peace. Your guide will accompany you to Saut du Gendarme waterfall, nestled amidst tropical vegetation—an ideal setting to immerse yourself in nature. The Alma River, also known as Rivière Blanche, boasts similar landscapes, offering a refreshing spot for a cool dip.
Memories of History
However, let’s not forget that Martinique hasn’t always been synonymous only with beauty and serenity. The Cap 100 Mémoire et Fraternité, a memorial monument to slavery, reminds us of the difficult history of the Caribbean. The 15 gigantic busts arranged in a triangle shape recall the slave trade between the Americas, Europe, and Africa.
During a northern Martinique excursion, you’ll also have the opportunity to visit the ruins of Saint-Pierre, another reminder of the island’s painful past. The city of Saint-Pierre, former capital, was destroyed by the volcano Mount Pelée in 1902. The eruption caused 30,000 deaths, and the city remained uninhabited for 20 years.
Fort Saint-Louis, on the other hand, is both a relic of the past and an active naval base, the only one of its kind in the entire Caribbean. The fortress dates back to the late 17th century and is remarkably well-preserved. You can enjoy an exceptional panorama from here.
Excursions and Delicious Local Products
Because it’s inevitable in the rum paradise, we’ll take you to visit a renowned artisanal distillery. In the south, you’ll find the Trois Rivière distillery where you’ll discover the ancestral methods of making agricultural rum. Up north, we’ll stop at one of the last distilleries, Neisson Rum. This family-owned business, famous for its white rums, will reveal its production processes. You’ll have the opportunity to taste pure Martinican rum and take home a souvenir!
To satisfy foodies, we’ve crafted a gourmet excursion. It includes visits to some of the island’s must-see locations but focuses on culinary discovery. You’ll sample typical Martinican food amidst a dreamy setting. Tropical fruits, traditional Creole dishes, and local delicacies—we’ve selected the best for your taste buds. Martinican cuisine blends Indian, African, and European influences, and your guide will explain its origins in detail.
