Martinique, Land of Rum Excellence

09/16/2025 0 By Nathalie de Beyond the Beach

Martinique is world-renowned for its rhum agricole, an exceptional spirit distinguished by a unique AOC label—the only one of its kind in the world. Behind every bottle lies a story, a terroir, a family, and a savoir-faire passed down through generations. Beyond the Beach presents its Top 5 must-visit distilleries, carefully selected for their heritage, the beauty of their estates, and of course, the quality of their rums.

1. Habitation Clément – Le François

A true symbol of Martinican heritage, Habitation Clément is much more than a distillery. Visitors discover a 160-hectare estate in the heart of sugarcane fields, a beautifully restored Creole house, active aging cellars, and a botanical park classified as a “Remarkable Garden.” Habitation Clément also stands out for its openness to art, with contemporary exhibitions displayed across the property.

On the program: a stroll through tropical gardens, a guided tour of the historic production buildings, a deep dive into barrel aging, and of course, a tasting of Clément rums—from classics to special cuvées. It’s the perfect spot to combine culture, history, nature, and refined flavors.

2. Neisson Distillery – Le Carbet

A small, family-run, independent distillery, Neisson is one of the jewels of Martinican rum. Here, sugarcane is cultivated with passion and precision, respecting the volcanic terroir of the Northern Caribbean. Long fermentations and traditional methods produce exceptionally fine rums, often described as the island’s most aromatic.

The visit offers an intimate, authentic atmosphere: explore the copper stills, barrels, and family history, before ending with a tasting that delights both connoisseurs and curious newcomers. An experience full of character—just like its rums.

A1710 stands out for its artisanal, high-end approach: hand-cut cane, distillation in a traditional copper pot still, and careful bottling.

What draws visitors here is refinement and a constant pursuit of excellence. The guided tour reveals a rare craft that blends tradition and innovation, while tastings highlight elegant, complex rums with unique aromatic profiles. A true gem for demanding rum lovers.

The visit is comprehensive: discover the working distillery, the aging cellars, manicured gardens, and the magnificent Depaz Château. The experience ends with a tasting showcasing the full range—from bold white rums to elegant aged varieties. A must for those seeking history, breathtaking scenery, and sensory discovery.

Famous worldwide, Trois Rivières captivates visitors with both the quality of its rums and the beauty of its setting. The seaside estate is marked by its iconic windmill and sugarcane fields swept by trade winds.

The tour immerses you in the history of Martinican rum, lets you admire the production facilities, and offers sweeping views of the southern coast.
