Description

Embark on an extraordinary adventure to discover Mount Pelée, Martinique’s legendary peak. From the Aileron refuge (800 metres above sea level), you will begin a climb of nearly 700 metres through a dense and mysterious tropical forest.

Guided by Nicolas, you will learn to recognise endemic plants and gradually discover a changing landscape: the vegetation gives way to volcanic rocks and the humidity becomes more noticeable. As you progress towards the summit, the view opens up onto the sea, craters and surrounding valleys.

There are two possible routes: a climb to the second refuge, ideal for immersing yourself in the mystical atmosphere of the volcano without going to the end of your effort, or a complete ascent to the summit of the ‘Chinois’ at 1,397 metres, which is more demanding but even more spectacular. The choice of route naturally influences the duration and difficulty.

Throughout the hike, Nicolas shares his knowledge of geology, active volcanoes and the tragic eruption of 1902, which marked the history of Saint-Pierre. He also explains the Volcanological Observatory’s mission in monitoring this sleeping giant.

A demanding but unforgettable hike, this outing offers breathtaking panoramic views of the north of the island on a clear day and, on a cloudy day, an almost mystical immersion in the clouds of the volcano.
